Civic Duty

7 11 2006

Well I have performed my civic duty and cast my ballot. I feel obligated to write about what I believe was the disenfranchisement of the citizen in line ahead of me. This individual was today denied the right to vote at my polling station. It likely didn’t help her that she was black (in a nearly 95% white county) but her name was not on the roll list. She was told she would not be able to vote at this precinct and escorted out of the building. I found it a bit troubling that she was not offered the option to vote provisionally (not sure if that is permitted in Michigan anyhow) and she was not told how she could remedy the situation. She was simply asked to leave. Anyhow, I hope this woman did not give up and made some phone calls.

Today I voted straight democratic with a couple of exceptions. At the state level, I voted for Jennifer Granholm. John(Boy) Engler got three tries to fuck up the state, I figured I would be fair and Give Jenny the same privilege. I voted the incumbents for the national seats and I did not vote for any of the state judicial races. I don’t know who these people are and figured I would not support a person I did not know enough about.

On the state proposals I voted yes for proposals 1, 4 and 5 and no for proposals 2 (affirmative action ban), 3 (mourning dove). I think affirmative action is still useful and I want the mourning doves to continue to mourn their existence.

Locally, I voted for farmland preservation and I also voted for the county operations millage. Both I felt were useful tax supported services. It will be interesting to see if the operations millage passes. There are a lot of people bitching and hollering about another millage and they all say it’s not needed. I would hate to be in their shoes when one of them has a heart attack and they call up the 911 service and find out the office is closed due to budget constraints. Dip shits want the services but don’t want to pay for them. It’s called being CHEEP and is a byproduct of being OLD. That is one of the reasons this county has so many problems. Get over the GIMMIE, GIMMIE, GIMMIE becuase I’m old and deserve it for free shit.

I’ll post results of the election likely sometime this weekend. For now, I need to go and clean out the garage so it’s ready to go for the winter!
